About the Book
This volume presents the findings of a large-scale national survey, sponsored by ICSSR, on the educational status of Scheduled Tribes (STs) in India. The study spans across 69 districts in 15 states, investigating not just the STs but also non-STs as a control group. Data was collected from 14,924 ST households and 5,919 non-ST households, along with 15,575 ST students and 4,924 non-ST students across various educational levels—upper primary, secondary, higher secondary, and college.
The study delves into three key dimensions of the institutional education system: the socio-economic and cultural backgrounds of students, the functioning of educational institutions, and the aspirations and performance of students in examinations. Key research questions explore the nature of educational institutions, the behavior of teachers towards ST and non-SC/ST students, the learning process, and the impact of tribal and ethnic cultural values on education.
This research not only provides valuable insights for future studies but also offers essential data for policymakers, educators, and social activists. The volume is a valuable resource for students of social sciences, particularly those studying sociology, anthropology, development studies, and policy sciences.
