About the Book
The term Glocal—a blend of 'global' and 'local'—emphasizes the importance of addressing both global and local issues through multi-scale perspectives, a key element in advancing environmental education. With global environmental challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and population growth becoming increasingly urgent, there remains a significant gap between these serious issues and the reality of environmental education.
Environmental education often operates within the constraints of local to national contexts, influenced by political dynamics. This book examines global practices in environmental education, proposing rational ways forward. The volume includes papers presented at the 2008 International Symposium on Glocal Environmental Education, many of which have been extensively revised and updated for this publication, along with additional new contributions.
The book offers a comprehensive analysis of the challenges and solutions related to environmental education worldwide, providing practical recommendations for advancing the field. It aligns with the goals outlined in the Sapporo and Bonn Declarations and aims to contribute to achieving a more sustainable future.
