Description:
“Swapner Maslin” explores the rich heritage and commercial significance of Bengal’s muslin fabric, which flourished before Christ and became the subject of intense trade and conquest. This once-dominant textile art vanished swiftly between the 2nd and 6th decades of the 19th century, leaving behind a profound mystery. The book uncovers how muslin’s unique cotton—grown only in a small stretch of land near the Meghna River in Dhaka—became the centerpiece of an intricate textile transformation. The muslin industry sparked a booming cottage industry in rural Bengal, creating waves in international markets. However, the commercial expanse of muslin led to wars, legislative controls, and ultimately, the fabric’s demise. This book delves into the origins, growth, and tragic fall of muslin, offering a nuanced exploration of its impact.
