Summary:
Chabi Tola is a fascinating and informative book that takes readers on a historical journey through the practice of photography in Bengal. Written by Siddhartha Ghosh, the book recalls the early days of photography in Bengal, capturing the essence of the 19th century, when photography began to make its mark in Indian society. The book vividly describes various scenes from the past, like the elderly photographer shouting “photograph” in the streets and offering to capture portraits for a mere four annas, the fascinating setup of plate cameras, and the long-forgotten figures in the world of photography.

The author also delves into the history of famous photographers and subjects, narrating the fascinating, often unknown stories behind the iconic photographs of figures like Ishwar Gupta, Vidyasagar, Bankim Chandra, Ramkrishna, and Rabindranath Tagore. From the high-profile photographers in Bengal to those who worked in the Hindu households, the book uncovers the rich, intricate history of photography in Bengal, revealing hidden stories and the unsung heroes behind the images.

In addition, Chabi Tola also presents a counter-narrative to the European photographers' glorified history in India, challenging the conventional narratives. The book is enriched with a rare collection of both color and black-and-white photographs, most of which are printed on art plates, which enhances the charm and depth of the book.
