Author's Bio

Satyajit Ray (সত্যজিৎ রায়) was born on May 2, 1921, in Kolkata, India, into a distinguished family. He was the only child of Sukumar Ray, a celebrated poet, and Suprabha Ray. Satyajit completed his schooling at Ballygunge Government High School and later graduated from Presidency College, Kolkata, in 1940. He pursued further studies at Shantiniketan but left in 1942 to join the workforce.

In 1943, he began his career in advertising at D. J. Kimar, but it was his work in filmmaking and literature that earned him global recognition. His first film, Pather Panchali (1955), won critical acclaim and awards, including at the Cannes Film Festival.

Satyajit Ray’s literary debut came with Abstraction in 1941, followed by his first published story in 1961, coinciding with the revival of Sandesh magazine. His first book, Professor Shanku (1965), brought the titular character to life and won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1967. He also created the famous detective series Feluda (1965).

Satyajit Ray's work spans fiction, nonfiction, plays, essays, and screenplays, with more than 60 published works. He is remembered not only as a film director but also as an exceptional writer, illustrator, and storyteller. In recognition of his immense contributions to the arts, he received numerous awards, including the Bharat Ratna (India's highest civilian honor) and the Legion of Honour (France). He passed away on April 23, 1992, leaving behind an indelible legacy in world cinema and literature.
