Author's Bio

Bimal Kar (বিমল কর) was born on 3 Ashwin 1328 in the Bengali calendar, corresponding to 1921 in the English calendar. His childhood was spent in various locations including Jabalpur, Hazaribagh, Gomoh, Dhanbad, and Asansol. He graduated from Calcutta University and began his career in 1942 with the ARP and later in 1943 at the Munition Production Depot in Asansol. In 1944, he joined the railways in Varanasi.

Kar had a significant role in the Bengali literary world, serving as co-editor of the Parag magazine, edited by Manilal Bandopadhyay, and later as sub-editor for Pashchimbanga magazine and Satyajug magazine between 1946-1952. From 1954 to 1982, he worked with Desh, a leading weekly publication, and was the editor of Shiladitya monthly from 1982 to 1984.

He was the pioneer of the 'New Method of Short Story' movement in Bengali literature and received numerous prestigious awards, including the Anand Puraskar (1967 and 1992), Sahitya Akademi Award (1975), and the Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay Award (1981) from Calcutta University.

Bimal Kar passed away on August 26, 2003, leaving behind a rich legacy in Bengali literature.
