About the Author

Sunil Gangopadhyay (7 September 1934 – 23 October 2012) was a legendary figure in Bengali literature. Born in Faridpur, Bangladesh, he earned his Master’s degree in Bengali literature from the University of Calcutta. Sunil began his career as a tutor and later ventured into journalism, government service, and UNESCO’s literacy programs.

Initially recognized for his poetry, Sunil gained iconic status as the founder-editor of Krittibas magazine. He transitioned into novel writing with Atmaprakash, marking the beginning of his literary acclaim. Sunil’s versatile talent is evident in his works for both children and adults, earning him accolades such as the Sahitya Akademi Award (1985), Bankim Puraskar (1983), and the Anand Puraskar. His Kakababu-Santu series continues to be a beloved part of Bengali children's literature.

He wrote under pseudonyms like Neel Lohit, Sanatan Pathak, and Neel Upadhyay, showcasing his vast literary range.
