  • Original Name: Taraknath, though he gained fame with the name Narayan Gangopadhyay.

  • Early Life: Grew up near the Atrai River in Dinajpur and later studied in Faridpur.

  • Education: First-class first in M.A. in Bengali Literature.

  • Career:

    • Began as a professor at City College, Kolkata, and later served at the University of Calcutta.
    • Earned a D.Litt. for his research on short stories.
    • Wrote extensively across genres—short stories, novels, essays, plays, and even screenplays.
  • Notable Contributions:

    • His first story was Nishither Maya, and his first published novel was Upanibes.
    • Renowned for the Tenida series, which brought humor and adventure to Bengali children's literature.
    • Wrote under the pen name Sunanda in later years, gaining immense popularity for his humorous essays.
  • Awards and Recognition:

    • Won the Kothashilpi Award for storytelling.
    • Received the Sarojini Basu Gold Medal posthumously from the University of Calcutta.
