- Author Background: Satyajit Ray (সত্যজিৎ রায়), born on May 2, 1921, in North Kolkata, was a legendary filmmaker and writer. The son of Sukumar Ray, a celebrated writer and artist, and Suprabha Ray, Satyajit studied at Presidency College and later attended Santiniketan. His career in cinema began with the internationally acclaimed film Pather Panchali (1955), which won the Best Film Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Satyajit Ray is also known for his literary works, particularly in children's literature. His first work of fiction, Professor Shanku, came out in 1965, and his famous detective series, Feluda, began the same year with Feludar Goyendagiri. Over his career, he received numerous accolades including India's highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, and international recognitions like the Legion of Honour (France) and an honorary Oscar. He passed away on April 23, 1992.
