About the Book
The concept of secularism is complex and multifaceted, tied to the belief that an individual's actions and decisions should be based on reason and practical wisdom, rather than religious beliefs and influences. Secularism is a vital component of liberal democracy, and India’s traditional values of religious freedom, tolerance, and coexistence laid the foundation for its adoption of a liberal democratic constitutionalism. To ensure the unity and integrity of the nation and to provide its people with freedom, equality, justice, and dignity, a secular democratic system was adopted in India.
Indian secularism is based on the principles of equal respect for all religions and equal opportunity for all citizens. The Constitution of India calls for equal respect for all religions, grants individuals the freedom to practice their religion, and provides protection for the rights of minority communities. This book attempts to analyze the constitutional provisions and their implementation, especially in light of Supreme Court judgments. It covers the protection of minority rights, issues like Islamophobia, social justice, caste-based reservations, a uniform civil code, religious conversion, love jihad, cow slaughter, communalism, and communal violence.
In this work, the author has critically examined the issues related to secularism and tried to develop a balanced perspective on how to resolve them. The book emphasizes the need for a political culture that promotes cooperation, trust, and a sense of Indian identity among the public and fosters constitutional morality and public service within the government.
