About the Author:
Professor Tapan Raychaudhuri (born 1926) is a renowned historian specializing in Indian economic and social history. He was a Professor of Indian History and Civilization at Oxford University and a fellow of St. Antony's College, Oxford. Prior to his tenure at Oxford, he taught at Calcutta University, and later held prestigious positions such as Assistant Director at the National Archives, Head of the Delhi School of Economics, and Professor of Economic History at Delhi University.
He has taught as a Visiting Professor at several international universities, including Harvard, Pennsylvania, California, and others in Australia, Mexico, and France. Professor Raychaudhuri is regarded as one of India's foremost scholars in the field of Indian history, particularly in the economic and social aspects. His well-known works include Bengal under Akbar and Jahangir, Jan Company in Coromandel, and Europe Reconsidered. His Europe Reconsidered won the Rabindra Award in 1987.
In addition to his academic achievements, Professor Raychaudhuri's writing includes his first Bengali book, Romonthon, and he was recently awarded an honorary D.Litt degree by Oxford University. His writings continue to be influential among students and scholars of history.
