Summary:
In this book, Bahurupi explores the art and tradition of Bengali folk culture, focusing on the performing artists known as "bahurupis." These artists would assume multiple identities, wearing different disguises, and entertain people at festivals, markets, and gatherings. Historically, these individuals were an essential part of the community, providing entertainment while also occasionally engaging in begging.

The book dives deep into the rich cultural heritage of this dying art form, focusing on one of the greatest living exponents of the craft, Subal Das Bairagi, who is considered a custodian and visionary of this tradition. His personal experiences and contributions provide valuable insight into the challenges and rewards of being a bahurupi.

Mala Maitra, the author, sheds light on the decline of this tradition and the efforts made by contemporary artists to preserve it. This work offers readers a comprehensive view of the intricate relationships between performance art, folk culture, and society.
