Summary:
Banglar Tanti O Tantshilpa explores the rich history of the handloom industry in Bengal, which has endured through the ages. The book highlights various iconic Bengali saree traditions such as Musslin, Jamdani, Baluchori, Tangail, Dhanekhali, and Begumpuri, which have long been the embodiment of Bengal's cultural heritage. The history of Bengali handloom weaving is tied to these sarees, each with its own story. For instance, the Musslin is considered the origin of this tradition, while Jamdanis and Baluchori sarees are intricately linked to the history of Dhaka and Murshidabad respectively. The book also underscores the unique place of Tangail sarees within the history of the region.

Through the detailed discussion of these regional sarees, the book covers the craftsmanship, workmanship, and diversity that Bengal's weavers have brought to the industry. It explores the evolution of handloom production systems, the social and economic contexts in which these artisans lived, and how their craft flourished through history. The author also delves into the lives of these weavers, portraying their lifestyles, social positions, religious practices, and even folklore associated with the craft such as proverbs, songs, and rhymes.

This comprehensive work provides a deep insight into the role of Bengali weavers in shaping the cultural identity of Bengal through their labor and artistry.
