Description
The present work is intended to describe in detail the wall paintings brought to India by Sir Aurel Stein from his two Central Asian expeditions of archaeological and geographical research during 1906–1908 and 1913–1916. These wall paintings, originating from ancient shrines located between Kashgar in the west and Suchom in the east, across routes including Taklamakan, Tien-Shan range, Maral-Bashi, Ak-su, Kucha, and Korla, were carefully removed, preserved, and transported to Delhi.

This catalogue narrates the story of Stein’s explorations across vast areas of China. Sir Stein is credited with the rediscovery of Eastern civilization and culture, uncovering these shrines and paintings despite immense hardships, discomfort, and dangers. His painstaking efforts involved dismantling wall paintings in their original form, securely packing and transporting them through deserts, and reconstructing them in museums for public display, reconnecting people with the once-forgotten rich cultural ties between Central Asia, China, and India.

The author, an authority in his field, meticulously details the features of the discovered paintings, discussing aspects like posture, character, general outlook, and probable dating based on stylistic features.

The publishers are proud to present this masterpiece, a significant contribution to scholars of history, archaeology, and painting.
