Book Description:

রবিনাটকের নাট্যকথা (Rabinataker Natyakatha) is a comprehensive exploration of Rabindranath Tagore's contributions to Bengali theatre, focusing on his plays and the stage adaptations of his novels and stories. The book discusses the evolution of Rabindranath's dramatic works, examining how his theatrical thoughts and the unique form of Rabindra theatre, which emerged from his literary genius, established a distinct genre of its own. Starting with the performance of বাল্মীকিপ্রতিভা in 1881 at the Jorasanko house, the influence of Rabindranath's theatrical works continues to resonate on the Bengali stage.

This book tracks the journey of Rabindra theatre from its inception through the poet's era to the present day, detailing the highs and lows along the way. It highlights the different phases of this theatre movement, from its beginnings at the family-run theatre in Rabindranath’s home to its inclusion in the mainstream Bengali stage and its continuation at Santiniketan. The narrative also delves into how Rabindranath’s dramas were presented and staged in various contexts, including at his own educational institution in Santiniketan, and the changing dynamics of these productions post-Rabindranath.

On the occasion of Rabindranath’s 150th birth anniversary, his works gained renewed attention on the Bengali stage. রবিনাটকের নাট্যকথা offers a concise overview of the progress of Rabindra theatre over the past 135 years, reflecting on the productions and performances that have shaped its path.
