Summary:
Chalachchitrer Itihase New Theatres by Pinaki Chakraborty is a tribute to the legacy of New Theatres, one of the pioneering institutions in the history of Indian cinema. This book delves into the history and influence of New Theatres Studio, which was founded in the 1930s by Birendranath Sarkar (B.N. Sarkar). The studio's environment, which was often described as an artist's haven, helped propel it to the forefront of Indian cinema.
At the height of its glory, New Theatres was the dominant force in Indian film production, producing films in multiple languages and becoming a landmark in the evolution of Indian cinema. The studio, which became a cultural hub, produced nearly 166 films within 25 years. Rabindranath Tagore, during a visit for the filming of Notir Puja, famously remarked that New Theatres was like his "second Shantiniketan."
Despite its significant contributions to Indian cinema, New Theatres saw a decline over time. Its once-glorious films and achievements became forgotten in the annals of history. The last film under the famous New Theatres banner was released 50 years ago, after which the studio's influence diminished, and it faded into obscurity. While the studio still exists today, it no longer holds the same power or status it once did. However, its contributions to Indian cinema cannot be overlooked.
Pinaki Chakraborty offers a comprehensive historical perspective, shedding light on the unforgettable achievements of New Theatres, its role in shaping Indian cinema, and how the studio elevated films as an entertainment medium. The book explores New Theatres' artistic environment, its modern contributions, and the legacy it left behind in the cinematic world.
