Details: Marcus Vitruvius Pollio (born c. 80–70 BC, died after c. 15 BC), commonly known as Vitruvius, was a Roman author, architect, and engineer during the 1st century BC. Vitruvius asserts that a structure must exhibit the three qualities: it must be solid, useful, and beautiful. He describes many construction materials used for various structures, as well as finishing materials such as stucco painting, lime, plaster, and innovations in building design to improve the living conditions of the inhabitants. His work demonstrates the role of architecture in the development of technology. Vitruvius describes many machines, such as hoists, cranes, pulleys, catapults, ballistae, and siege engines, as well as the construction of sundials and water clocks, and the use of the aeolipile (the first steam engine) to demonstrate atmospheric air movements. The book covers wide-ranging topics, from architectural education and the development of humanity to temple design, construction methods, materials, climatic effects, acoustics, aqueducts, and waterworks. It also delves into astronomy, sundials, defense apparatus, and other machinery. Architectural principles are explained through design examples and drawings. Vitruvius formulated basic principles of city planning, including site selection, orientation, topography, and the health aspects of the ground, alongside military necessities. Street layout and wind direction were important considerations in planning. The value of this treatise in understanding the classical ideals of architecture, construction materials, and technology cannot be overemphasized.
