Book Description
PREFACE
The project on Asia in the Core Curriculum began in 1984 to support the introduction of material on Asia into the core curricula of undergraduate institutions across the United States. Three "Guides for Teaching" emerged as a result of dialogue between Asian specialists and those focused on the Western tradition, often teaching introductory courses in history, literature, and social sciences. This initiative doesn’t seek to elevate Asia over the West but rather to incorporate significant Asian material into the core courses.

The primary goals were to identify themes, texts, and comparative concepts that would allow Asian material to be introduced into these courses. Questions such as "How can core courses focused on Western culture and traditions benefit from Asian traditions?" and "What aspects of the diverse Asian traditions should be brought to students’ attention?" were explored.

The guides are titled:

  1. Asia in Western and World History

  2. Masterworks of Asian Literature in Comparative Perspective

  3. Asia: Case Studies in the Social Sciences

Approximately forty essays by leading specialists in each volume offer a broad range of possibilities for introducing Asian material. While each guide is an independent publication, collectively, they form an interdisciplinary series. For example, instructors teaching anthropology may benefit from Lawrence Babb’s overview of religion in India (from Asia: Case Studies in the Social Sciences), while Ainslie Embree’s South Asian history overview (from Asia in Western and World History) and Barbara Stoler Miller’s examination of Indian literature (Masterworks of Asian Literature in Comparative Perspective) will also be useful.

The Project on Asia in the Core Curriculum has involved over 100 scholars from 75 public and private institutions. It is chaired by a panel at Columbia University, including Wm. Theodore de Bary, Ainslie T. Embree, and Carol Gluck, with sponsorship from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Henry Luce Foundation, the Matsushita Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Education. The project continues to grow and welcomes all contributions.
