About the Book
This book presents a detailed study of the various ashrams established by Mahatma Gandhi, which played a crucial role in the evolution of his ideology and methods. Gandhi chose South Africa and India as his areas of work, where these ashrams became laboratories for his thoughts and experiments. These centers of thought and action were not only places of community life but also training grounds for the warriors of non-violence—satyagrahis. The ashrams became places where Gandhi tested his theories of social change and developed methodologies that eventually led India to freedom.
The book explores different ashrams, such as the Phoenix Settlement, Tolstoy Farm, and the various Satyagraha Ashrams (at Kochrab, Sabarmati, and Sevagram), which were developed not just for communal living but for training individuals in non-violent resistance. Gandhi was greatly influenced by Tolstoy's ideology that, just like warriors are trained for violent wars, non-violent warriors must also be trained rigorously.
In these ashrams, Gandhi’s followers learned the true essence of Satyagraha, which required them to endure suffering, sacrifice, and develop the capacity to "die to self" without inflicting harm on others. The book delves into these aspects, studying Gandhi’s social, economic, and political philosophy that formed the basis of his leadership and nation-building efforts.
The volume also touches upon Gandhi's views on secularism, the concept of Gram Swaraj (village self-rule), and the various aspects of life that Gandhi experimented with within the ashrams. It’s a deep dive into Gandhi's philosophy and how these ashrams became the backbone of India's freedom struggle.
