About the Book

Shaping of Social Stratification in India by K.L. Sharma offers a comprehensive study of India's social structure post-independence. The book analyzes the restructuring of Indian society, which seeks to transform the inegalitarian traditional social order into a more equitable system of relations. The focus is on understanding the theory, structure, and processes behind hierarchy and social inequality.

The collection of scholarly essays delves into the multinational, historical, and contextual nature of social inequality, emphasizing how caste, class, family, and individual function not only as units of social ranking but also as frameworks for shaping consciousness and social relations. Central themes explored include the interrelationship between caste and class, the role of education in reshaping the caste system, and the mobility of weaker sections such as Scheduled Castes and Tribes.

With its focus on caste, class, power, and social mobility, this book serves as an invaluable source for researchers, students, and scholars interested in understanding the complexities of Indian social structure.
