About the Book
In the second edition of Postmodernity, David Lyon delves into the social condition of the twenty-first century, where the features of modernity are both questioned and undermined by emerging trends. Postmodernity, a term used to describe this evolving state of society, addresses the transformation of modernity through new technologies and consumerism. These changes, while rooted in modern contexts, now impact everyday social life, altering the structure of modernity itself.
The book presents postmodernity as a societal transformation, not necessarily a departure from modernity, but as an evolving phase of it. Lyon argues that the term "postmodernity" best captures the social shifts we experience today, distinguishing it from other concepts like “high” or “late” modernity.
The text explores the theoretical underpinnings of postmodernity, focusing on social trends, historical roots, and cultural dimensions. It also examines the views of key theorists and provides an updated perspective on the effects of globalization, cyberspace, cyborgs, and moral conflicts in the modern world.
