About the Book
Globalisation, Leisure, and Social Change is a festschrift in honour of Dr. Ishwar P. Modi, an eminent sociologist and the past President of the Indian Sociological Society. This volume brings together scholarly contributions on the evolving role of leisure in different societies, emphasizing the impact of globalization on leisure activities, culture, and social structures. The book focuses on the distinction between ‘work’ and ‘leisure’, primarily a Western construct, and explores how this dichotomy does not always apply universally across cultures.
The volume highlights the influence of globalization in defining leisure activities and deepening the divide between work and leisure. It offers empirical and historical case studies from diverse global cultures, documenting variations in leisure practices, and how they shape and are shaped by societal changes. The contributors provide insights into leisure’s relationship with social inequalities, mental health, sports, tourism, urbanization, and family life.
This book is valuable for students of sociology, globalization studies, and social sciences, providing a rich comparative analysis of leisure and social change across cultures.
