About the Book
Caste is a deeply entrenched cultural category that has severely crippled Indian society for centuries. Despite the Indian Constitution offering protection to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes against caste discrimination, and the creation of numerous laws and policies aimed at preventing this discrimination, the issue persists. This book investigates the various forms of caste discrimination still prevalent in India, 66 years after independence, in social, economic, educational, legal, and cultural domains.
The caste system, despite changes in India’s social institutions, remains entrenched in modern society due to the mindset of the majority of Indians. Not only is caste discrimination found within Hinduism, but it also exists in Islam and Christianity, underscoring the widespread nature of the issue. The book includes twelve research articles contributed by eminent academicians, experts, and researchers from Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. These articles delve into the institutionalized nature of caste-based discrimination and its impact on society.
This book serves as a critical resource for understanding the complexity of caste discrimination in India today and will be useful for anyone studying India, its social structures, and human rights issues.
