About the Book

"Urban Fringe: A Transition Zone" brings together a collection of essays presented at a seminar, offering a detailed exploration of the urban fringe areas — the transition zone between rural and urban spaces. The urban fringe is both an area of significant future growth and one that faces complex developmental challenges before its eventual integration into the city. This book highlights the rapid, often chaotic development that these periurban regions experience and addresses the underlying socio-economic issues.

Written by geographers, architects, planners, and social scientists from both India and abroad, the essays provide diverse perspectives on the nature of the fringe, historical development, and the consequences of urban expansion. Topics include the rural-urban dichotomy, the fast-paced transformations, the problems related to development, and the overall impact of urbanization on the economic life of its people. The book also evaluates urban planning, focusing on the shortcomings during the implementation phases and the inevitable interference from politicians and land speculators.

This book will be an invaluable resource for students of urbanism and anyone interested in understanding the future of urban growth in India.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Historic Development of Suburban Areas

  • Rural-Urban Dichotomy and Urban Expansion

  • Problems in the Development of Urban Fringe Areas

  • Impact of Urban Expansion on Economic Life

  • Role of Urban Planning and Challenges in Plan Implementation
