About the Book

This exceptional volume brings the monumental commentary Shri Subodhini of Mahaprabhu Shri Vallabhacharya (c. 1479–1531) to the English-speaking world for the first time. Focusing on devotion (bhakti) to Lord Shri Krishna, this work offers an insightful exploration of the bhavartha (the deeper spiritual meaning) behind the original Sanskrit verses of the Maha Bhagavata Purana.

The tenth canto of the Sri Bhagavatam is considered the most revered and sacred by Vaishnavas, as it highlights the divine pastimes (leelas) of Lord Krishna, the Supreme Purushottama, the eternal Lord of the universe.

Shri Subodhini is regarded as the most detailed commentary among all interpretations of the Bhagavatam, and this volume covers seven chapters of the 10th canto, with:

  • The original Sanskrit verses

  • Their English translations

  • The Sanskrit text of Shri Subodhini

  • English translations of the commentary

The seven chapters covered in this volume explore:

  1. The redemption of Arishtasura and Kamsa sending Akrura to Vrindavan

  2. The redemption of Kesi and Vyomasura and the praise sung by Sage Narada

  3. The journey of Akrura to Vrindavan

  4. The arrival of Lord Krishna and Lord Balarama in Mathura

  5. The praise of Lord Krishna sung by Akrura

  6. The divine entry of Lord Krishna into Mathura

  7. Lord Krishna's mercy on Kubja, the breaking of the bow, and the fear of Kamsa

The translation is a humble attempt by Ramanan to bring this sacred commentary to a global audience. It is deeply inspired by the love, grace, and teachings of his Guru, Shri Ubhaya Vedanta Srirangam Sampath Kumara Swami, and Shri Shyam Manohar Goswamijee, a direct descendant of Shri Vallabhacharya.

Ramanan hopes that this work will serve as a gateway for readers to experience the divine mercy of Lord Krishna and the rich spiritual tradition of the Bhagavatam, and humbly presents this translation as an offering of devotion.
