About the Book:
Karmelin is a poignant English translation of Damodar Mauzo’s celebrated Konkani novel, translated by Vidya Pai. The story follows the life of Karmelin, a young orphaned girl in South Goa, as she struggles against poverty, social constraints, and personal hardships. Betrayed by a negligent husband and forced by circumstances, Karmelin works as a maid in Kuwait to secure a better future for her family.
Set against the contrasting backdrops of modern-day Kuwait and the lush landscapes of Goa, the novel explores themes of sexual exploitation, caste dynamics, gender discrimination, family politics, and resilience. Mauzo vividly portrays the bittersweet triumphs and trials of Karmelin, making the narrative both powerful and heartwarming.
“In the struggle of one woman lies the story of a community, its sorrows, hopes, and enduring spirit.”
