About the Book
This revised edition of Feminist Social Thought, 2ed. offers a thorough examination of the key works and ideas of six major feminist thinkers who shaped second-wave feminist thought in the 1960s and 70s. The book provides a clear understanding of feminist classics like The Second Sex, The Feminine Mystique, Sexual Politics, and The Dialectic of Sex, which have significantly advanced debates around gender roles and women’s liberation.
Each chapter of the book delves into the life and work of influential thinkers such as Simone de Beauvoir, Betty Friedan, Kate Millett, Shulamith Firestone, Juliet Mitchell, and Sheila Rowbotham. The book also explores the social and political environments that shaped these feminist scholars' work, providing historical context to their ideas.
In this updated edition, there is a new section dedicated to the evolution of feminism in India, tracing its development from early nationalist movements to the contemporary feminist struggles of today. The text serves as an essential academic resource, offering a comprehensive introduction to second-wave feminist scholarship and providing valuable insights for students and educators of Women's Studies, Sociology, and Literary Theory.
