About the Book
Durgeshnandini by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, first published in 1865, is considered a revolutionary work in Bengali prose writing. Widely regarded as the first modern novel in an Indian language, this historical romance is set in the 16th century during the reign of the Mughal emperor Akbar, amidst the turmoil of the Mughal army’s battles against the Pathans for control over eastern India.
The novel intricately weaves a romance between a young Rajput commander in the Mughal army and the daughter of a minor ruler. However, the story deepens when a beautiful Pathan princess also falls in love with the Rajput commander, challenging the norms of her society and defying her suitor, the Pathan army chief. Bankim Chandra subtly explores themes of love across caste and religion, questioning social norms and barriers in a nuanced manner.
The novel’s immense popularity is reflected in its thirteen editions published during Bankim Chandra’s lifetime and its translations into several languages. Durgeshnandini is not only a romantic tale but also a critical commentary on the social and cultural landscapes of the time.
