Details:
Psychoanalytic Geographies is a unique, path-breaking volume and a core text for anyone seeking to understand how psychoanalysis helps us tackle fundamental geographical questions. It explores how geographical thinking can offer fresh insights into psychoanalysis. The book elaborates on various psychoanalytic approaches including Freudian, Lacanian, Kristevan, and Irigarayan, and discusses conceptual themes such as space, power, identity, culture, political economy, colonialism, ethics, and aesthetics.
Psychoanalytic Geographies presents a wide range of interdisciplinary insights, with contributions from fields such as Geography, English, Sexuality Studies, and History of Science. It also examines empirical contexts like the reception of psychoanalysis in early twentieth-century England, psychoanalytic geographies of violence and creativity in a small Mexican city, and visual cultures of second-generation Iranian artists in Los Angeles, among others.
This book is a comprehensive guide for understanding the complex relationship between psychoanalysis and geography, offering a diverse set of theoretical options for applying psychoanalysis in future work. It demonstrates the vitality of psychoanalytic geographies through a compelling and varied collection of essays.
Reviews:
-
"This volume derails the common assumption that geography is a simple study of the earth's basic inertness... The essays compellingly demonstrate that the unconscious of subjects operate as the underside of geographical exteriority." — Joan Copjec, Brown University, USA
-
"A must-read for anyone looking for a comprehensive guide to the relations between psychoanalysis and geography." — Anthony Elliott, Hawke Research Institute, Australia
-
"A rich, challenging, and exciting book that assembles a set of provocative, thoughtful, and wide-ranging chapters." — Social & Cultural Geography
