About The Book:
This collection of seven stories by V.S. Khandekar marks a significant return to writing after a gap of 56 years. During this period, many believed that Khandekar had lost his ability to write, and some even criticized him. However, Khandekar remained unfazed, knowing the limitations of critics and commentators. Though he had been writing, his work remained unfinished as he grappled with his thoughts on values and society, often leaving articles half-written.
During this time, Khandekar moved to Kolhapur, where he missed the seashore and the hills of Shiroda. He also began writing scripts for movies, but the onset of World War II and the destruction it brought led him to pause his work. Five years later, Khandekar resumed his writing and produced his first story, "Maunvrat."
In this collection, Khandekar reflects on the changing social patterns and his dissatisfaction with the new societal norms. He believed in the potential of socialism to bring happiness but felt that the old system of socialism had to be entirely dismantled for it to be truly effective. Through these stories, Khandekar explores the search for new virtues and a healthier societal atmosphere, offering deep insights into human nature, the effects of societal change, and the pursuit of true happiness.
This collection is a testament to Khandekar's resilience as a writer and his ability to reflect on the shifting tides of society, making it a valuable read for those interested in exploring the complexities of human nature and social change.
