About the Book:
This book provides a detailed geographical account of Jammu and Kashmir, located in the western Himalayas. The state’s physiography is described as a three-step terrace, with Jammu in the sub-Himalayan region, Kashmir in the Himalayan middle, and Ladakh in the Trans-Himalayan upper region. This geographical diversity is reflected in the varying environmental conditions, with Jammu being hilly, Kashmir consisting of a large plain surrounded by mountains, and Ladakh being a highland desert.
The climate varies across the state, from subtropical in the southern Jammu region to temperate in Kashmir and cold highland desert in Ladakh, each having its own unique environmental assets and challenges. The book offers a clear, coherent account of the state’s geography, drawing on research findings and fieldwork, combined with the author's decades of teaching experience.
