Description:
Curt Sachs was a German-born, American-domiciled musicologist and one of the founders of modern studies on musical instruments. His monumental work, Real-Lexicon der Musikinstrumente, first published in 1913, is arguably the most comprehensive survey of musical instruments in two centuries.
In 1914, Sachs, in collaboration with Erich Moritz von Hornbostel, published a groundbreaking work in Zeitschrift für Ethnologie, which introduced a new system of classifying musical instruments. Known as the Sachs-Hornbostel system, this classification method remains widely used by ethnomusicologists and organologists, despite undergoing several revisions and facing some criticism over the years.
