About the Book
Economics of Sanitation: Approaches and Avenues presents a refreshing perspective on sanitation, shifting the focus from a predominantly sociological narrative to an economic analysis. In a world where sanitation is often under-prioritized in policy and academia, this book highlights its integral role in fostering health, education, and economic development, especially within developing countries.
The term "Sanitation Economy" is central to this book—defined as a system of investments related to toilets, hygiene, and waste management that creates both social and economic value. The book argues convincingly that sanitation should not only be seen as a social service but also as a significant contributor to national and local economies.
Structured into 14 insightful chapters, the book explores diverse themes including good sanitation practices, the intersection of sanitation with the food sector, rural and urban sanitation challenges, and the economic burden of poor sanitation. Special attention is given to India’s efforts through policies like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, and the need for sustainable, long-term solutions. The author also addresses areas needing further research, thereby making this book a valuable resource for students, researchers, policy-makers, and development professionals.
