Author Info:
T.W. Rhys Davids was a renowned scholar and one of the pioneering figures in the study of Buddhism. His works have had a significant impact on the understanding of Buddhist history and philosophy. He contributed to the translation of Pali texts and is well known for his academic approach to Buddhist studies.
Preface:
In this work, T.W. Rhys Davids makes an attempt to describe ancient India during the period of Buddhist ascendancy, from the perspective of the Rajput rather than the Brahmin. This viewpoint contrasts with the traditionally dominant Brahmin perspective, which has been regarded as authoritative by Europeans since their entry into India. Rhys Davids challenges this dominant view, especially considering the rivalry between priests and nobles during the period in question. He acknowledges that his attempt may be seen as controversial, as the Brahmin perspective has long been revered and remains the accepted interpretation of Indian history. Rhys Davids, however, seeks to offer a new perspective by presenting the views of the Rajputs, who often opposed the Brahmins, thus presenting a more nuanced understanding of ancient Indian history.
