About The Book
Mahachiner Pathik (The Pilgrim of the Great Machine) is the Bengali translation of The Scalpel, The Sword, which chronicles the life and contributions of Dr. Norman Bethune. First published in 1952, the book has been translated into nineteen languages over the years, and this edition marks an important addition to Indian literature.
Dr. Norman Bethune was an internationally renowned thoracic surgeon, who was not only a brilliant medical professional but also an artist, poet, soldier, teacher, inventor, and a pioneering theorist in medical science. His contributions to medicine, especially during the Spanish Civil War and the Second Sino-Japanese War, are legendary. He believed in internationalism and fought fascism till his last breath.
Bethune's involvement in the Spanish Civil War as an active participant against fascism, and later, his efforts in China during the Chinese Liberation War, cemented his legacy as a selfless humanitarian. His death in China, where he succumbed to an infection after working tirelessly in a war zone, led to a tribute by Mao Zedong, who described him as "one of the greatest men of this era, a true Communist," and praised his dedication to Leninist principles.
Today, Norman Bethune stands as a symbol of humanity, self-sacrifice, and the struggle for freedom, lighting the way for generations of people fighting for liberation and justice. This book serves as a powerful reminder of his enduring legacy.
