About the Book
বিপ্লবী প্রীতিলতা chronicles the inspiring life of Preetilata Waddedar, the first female martyr of India's independence struggle. Born on May 5, 1911, Preetilata was a brilliant scholar who topped her B.A. exam from Bethune College with distinction in philosophy by the age of 21. Soon after, she took charge as the headmistress of Nandan Kanan Girls' School in Chittagong. However, her heart burned with the fire of rebellion against British imperial rule.
She soon joined the secret revolutionary society led by Masterda Surya Sen. Under her leadership, in 1932, a daring armed attack was launched on the European Club at Pahartali, a place notorious for banning Indians and dogs alike. To avoid capture by the British after the attack, Preetilata took potassium cyanide, becoming the first Indian woman to sacrifice her life for freedom from colonial rule.
The book also highlights the life of Haripada De, founder and principal of Khatua Preetilata Shiksha Niketan, born in 1929 in Khulna district of undivided Bengal. Following a family tradition of education, Haripada De's lifelong contributions include establishing primary and secondary divisions of the school and authoring notable works on India’s first socialist government and youth rebellion in Chittagong.
This biography is a compelling tribute to two extraordinary lives committed to education and revolution, making it essential reading for those interested in Indian history, feminism, and the freedom movement.
