Professor A.K. Bhattacharyya is a renowned numismatist and cultural historian, best known for his significant contributions to the study of Indian and Trans-Indian art and iconography. Formerly the Director of the Indian Museum in Calcutta, Bhattacharyya's career spans decades of research, most notably in Indian numismatics. His early work includes co-authoring a comprehensive book on Indian art published in Tokyo, Japan, followed by a detailed examination of the Hackin collection of Indian coins at the Musée Guimet in Paris.

From 1965 to 1975, he continued his research on Indian coins, and his academic career was marked by numerous contributions to the fields of epigraphy, textiles, painting, and sculpture. Over the years, Bhattacharyya has produced more than twenty-four volumes on these subjects, emphasizing iconographic details.

His academic excellence has earned him numerous prestigious awards and fellowships, including the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship, Fellowships from the Museums Association of England, the Indian Council of Historical Research, the Japan Foundation, and the Pacific Cultural Foundation of the Republic of China, among others.

He holds two M.A. degrees, one in Sanskrit and the other in Islamic History and Culture, both with First Class honors. Throughout his career, he has served in various academic and research positions, including as a lecturer and visiting professor at universities in India, England, and China.
