About the Book
This insightful cultural study explores the concepts of honour and status within the context of the Mewar princely state in Rajasthan. Focusing on the rich social hierarchy and political culture of the region, it examines the importance of these concepts and how they have influenced the state's identity. Rather than following the traditional Rajput-centric approach, this study highlights the contributions of various communities, including Charans, Oswals, Brahmins, Bhils, and Muslims, in shaping the notions of honour and status.

The book delves into how these ideals are symbolized through rituals, polity, and the region's vibrant legends, particularly those surrounding figures like Meera and Padmini, reflecting gender constructions in the society. It also covers the transformation of the Mewar state from a monarchical governance system to a democratic polity, documenting the electoral processes and land reform measures that redefined the agrarian structure and polity. Despite the shift to democracy, the legacy of the royal family and its symbols continues to influence the people’s respect and social dynamics in the region.

This book unearths complex and unexplored aspects of Rajasthan's polity, offering a unique perspective on the evolution of social structures and the enduring significance of honour and status.
