📖 About The Book
Amen is the powerful and unflinching autobiography of Sister Jesme, who left the Congregation of Mother of Carmel on 31 August 2008 after enduring repeated attempts by the Church authorities to have her declared insane. Written in Marathi by Sunanda Amrapurkar, this memoir is a candid account of her 33 years in religious life, shedding light on the challenges, corruption, and personal conflicts she faced as a nun.
Born into a good Catholic family, Jesme was deeply rooted in her faith and was drawn to religious life at the age of seventeen. Despite her devotion, she became increasingly disturbed by the corruption within the convent: donations for college seats, sexual misconduct between priests and nuns, class distinctions, and the stark divide between the comforts enjoyed by the clergy and the hardships faced by the nuns. Jesme’s experiences of silence and oppression weighed heavily on her, yet she continued her work, earning her Doctorate in English Literature and pursuing her passion for teaching, literature, and cinema.
In Amen, Jesme boldly exposes the ills within the religious institution while maintaining a deep faith in Jesus and the Church. Her searing and sincere narrative calls for reformation within the Church, shedding light on the often unseen world of nuns and priests. This autobiography is both a plea for change and a testament to the unbroken spirit of a woman who continues to live by her faith, now outside the walls of the convent.
