Description:

The Surya Siddhanta is one of the earliest and most significant astronomical texts of ancient India. It follows the Upanishadic tradition and reveals the knowledge of planetary motions within our solar system, which was directly imparted by the Sun god to Mayasura, later passed down orally. The doctrine was later discussed by Varahamihira (CE 505-87) in his book Pancasiddhantika. This work presents a Hindi translation of the Sanskrit verses of the Surya Siddhanta, based on the famous English translations by Reverend Ebenezer Burgess (1860) and Pt. Bapu Deva Sastry (1861).

The book covers significant topics in its fourteen chapters, such as:

  • Units of time
  • Length of the year for gods and demons
  • The day and night of Brahma
  • The elapsed period since creation
  • Planetary eastwards movement and sidereal revolution
  • The length of the earth’s diameter and circumference
  • Eclipses and the color of the moon during eclipses

Additionally, appendices offer modern interpretations of these ancient concepts. Researchers and enthusiasts of ancient astronomy and Indian scientific thought will find this work deeply insightful.
