About the Book
This book is an English translation of the Shih-chia ju-lai ying-hua shih-chi, a classical Chinese compilation of key episodes from the life of Lord Buddha, originally cited from various Sutras translated into Chinese between the 3rd and 13th centuries. Compiled by monk Pao-ch’eng during the Ming period and revised under Prince Yung-shan, the work includes woodcut illustrations from 1787–93 depicting landscapes, buildings, people, and city layouts in 18th-century Chinese style. Each illustration serves as a "Visual Dharma," allowing readers to visualize the Buddha’s teachings. The volume is an invaluable resource for scholars of Buddhist art, thought, social life, and hagiography, presenting the life of Buddha through both textual and visual narratives.
