Author Info
R.G. Bhandarkar was appointed the Wilson Philological Lecturer in 1877, making him the first lecturer under the Endowment. His area of expertise was Sanskrit and the Prakrit languages derived from it. His understanding of Prakrit included modern Vernaculars of Northern India, and he delivered a series of lectures on various aspects of Sanskrit and its related languages. His topics included the Pāli and dialects of the period, the Prakrits and Apabhramsa, phonology of the Vernaculars, remnants of older grammatical forms, and new grammatical formations. His work continues to be a significant contribution to the study of Sanskrit and Prakrit languages.
