Sunil Gangopadhyay (সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়) was one of the most celebrated authors of contemporary Bengali literature. Born on September 7, 1934, in Kolkata, Gangopadhyay's prolific career spanned several decades, producing an immense body of work that includes novels, short stories, poems, essays, and children's literature.
Known for his versatility and innovation, Gangopadhyay was deeply influenced by the rich literary traditions of Bengal. He is best remembered for his creation of iconic literary characters such as Kolkata Kalo, Arjun, and Shankar, and for his ability to weave social realism with deep philosophical insights. His contribution to Bengali literature earned him numerous awards and accolades, including the prestigious Ananda Puraskar and Sahitya Akademi Award. He passed away on October 23, 2012.
