About the Author:
Ashok Mitra (1917–1994) was an esteemed civil servant and scholar, recognized for his contributions to the study of art and culture. He held significant positions in the Indian government, including Registrar General and Census Commissioner. Mitra was also an accomplished art critic and wrote extensively on art, history, and sociology. His influential works include Pashchim Eirop-er Chitrakala, Chhobi Kake Bole, and The Tribes and Castes of West Bengal. He received the Rabindra Puraskar in 1994 for his outstanding contributions.
